Supporting CE, Windows Mobile, PocketPC, Palm Symbian, iPhone, Windows, OS X and Linux, CorePlayer is currently the one player that uses the lowest CPU resources for playback of any modern media files, and includes full MKV and MKA support. However as of 1/2009 it does not support subtitles, RealVideo or AC3 playback. Please CorePlayer features one of the leading H.264 video decoders, CoreAVC. You can get this great player also in French, German and Russian language. It is DirectShow based, but has a built-in, internal matroska splitter, which is tending to be outdated ;- . We recommend to deactivate the internal splitter, and use it with one of the CCCP playback packs.

Still one our preferred media players, with excellent matroska support thanks to its matroska CDL plugin. Remember its also a DirectShow based player, so it will need a CCCP playback pack or at least the Haali media splitter to work for MKV files.

Currently the one player with the best matroska menu support, and not based on DirectShow if you don t like codec installation on your PC and it will play most of your MKVs out of the box.

A very good, DirectShow based mediaplayer with advanced matroska support in combination with the Haali media splitter.

Now that DivX has adopted the Matroska container for their HD content, they offer a good set of tools including a player, a DirectShow filter, a web player and an encoder.

foobar2000 is an advanced freeware audio player for the Windows platform. Some of the basic features include full unicode support, ReplayGain support and native support for several popular audio formats. It contains support for Matroska playback including displaying and editing tags.

Almost all you need to play. mkv matroska video and. mka matroska audio files under DirectShow players, such as Windows Mediaplayer, MPC, Zoomplayer and TCMP see above. To see an updated list of what these packs contain, look at the ReadMe on the site.

The most up to date DirectShow filter to read Matroska files. Support AVI and MP4 playback too, unfortunately not open source. Included in both matroska packs, most recent versions to be found on its homepage.

This is not really a filter, but it will help diagnose most DirectShow related problems when trying to play a Matroska file. Please use this tool if you can t play MKV files in Windows Mediaplayer, even after successful matroska pack installation, and send us the log file.

This filter is a general use decoder filter, based on the great FFMPEG library. It can decode most video and audio compression methods existing today and all in a single, powerful DirectShow filter for Windows Mediaplayer. There are later version of ffdshow out there than this one, however, they are not distributed from their official homepage on sourceforge anymore. Google is your friend.

This a DirectShow muxer filter. To use in GraphEdit, connect the filters outputting compressed data to the in pins of the Matroska Muxer. Then connect the out pin to the File Writer filter. Its used in both ATV2000 and VirtualVCR for MKV capturing.

THE standard matroska creation and editing tool, all recent builds supports the new lacing method, so make sure to have a recent splitter. The GUI is called mmg.exe, since 1.6.0 it is coming with a nice installer to make things easy for the user.

Project is more or less abandoned, nobody is working on it actively. Also, it can t support most of the modern MKV files anymore. Since version 1.5.10.1 it can handle the new lacing method. Please update to the latest bugfix, build 2542. Better use MKVToolNix or avi-mux GUI.

Definitely one of the best MKV creation and editing tools out there. Just the name sucks. .

A DirectShow based tool to convert VOB files to MKV.

This a command line tool to clean and optimize Matroska files that have already been muxed. It reorders the file for faster offline/online playback with the Cues at the front. Also comes with mkWDclean to modify files in a way they can play in broken players.

An unmaintained tool that has good success in recovering data from damaged Matroska files.
